Соседи Васисуалия Лоханкина подвергли его телесному наказанию за забывчивость, потому что он не выключал за собой свет в уборной. Конфликты, связанные с распределением платежей за электричество и беспокойство о лампочках в местах обшего пользования (см. об этом в рассказе Михаила Зощенко «Летняя передышка») — характерные черты коммунального быта. Остоженка — улица в самом центре Москвы, недалеко от Арбата, где дома в тихих переулочках, в глубине кварталов, когда-то сплошь состояли из коммуналок. В самом конце двадцатого века коммунальные квартиры там уже были большой редкостью.

The Ilf and Petrov character Vasisualy Lokhankin submits to a beating from fellow residents of his communal apartment for forgetting to turn off the light in the lavatory. Conflicts having to do with dividing up the electric bill and concerns over light bulbs in common areas (read more about this in the story by Mikhail Zoshchenko entitled "Summer Respite") are typical features of communal apartment life. Ostozhenka is a street in the very center of Moscow, not far from the Arbat. At one point the buildings in the quiet interior lanes off the street consisted of nothing but communal apartments. By the very end of the twentieth century, communal apartments there had become very rare.

Как известно, герой Ильфа и Петрова Васисуалий Лоханкин пострадал из-за того, что не выключал свет в общей уборной коммунальной квартиры. Однако и через семьдесят лет проблемы общей лампочки продолжают портить жизнь многим гражданам страны. В Москве, на Остоженке трое соседей поспорили, кто из них последним закручивал лампочку в общем коридоре на три комнаты. Когда все аргументы были исчерпаны, один из спорщиков, некто Василий Степанович, вывернул перегоревшую лампочку и продемонстрировал соседям свои инициалы, выцарапанные на цоколе. После этого конфликт был погашен, а лампочку завернул сосед из другой комнаты. Агентство экзотических новостей «Мегаполис-экспресс». 11 октября 2000 г.

Everybody knows how the character Vasisualy Lokhankin from the Ilf and Petrov novel The Little Golden Calf gets punished for not turning off the light in the communal lavatory. Seventy years later, the problem of the communal bulb continues to plague the existence of many Russian citizens. In Moscow on Ostozhenka Street three tenants were quarreling over which of them was the last one to put a new bulb in their hallway that served three rooms. When all the arguments had been exhausted, one of the men, a certain Vasily Stepanovich, unscrewed the blown-out bulb and revealed his initials, scratched into the base. The argument was over.
