Basic Facts and Background

When: December 2006

Where: A prestigious neighborhood in St. Petersburg, consisting mostly of buildings constructed at the beginning of the 20th century.

What: View of a street not far from the building where the apartments shown in Tours 1, 2, and 3 are located.

The buildings shown in this photograph were constructed later than the one in the Tours: in the center and to the left are typical examples of late Stalin-era (1950s) construction, and the building on the right was built in the 1970s. In the 1970s and 1980s, this building housed a large, fashionable cafe known as "Rome," after the arches and columns in the murals inside the cafe. The name helped to attract a regular clientele of hippies and black marketeers.

The signs read (from left to right): "Optician," "Jewelry," "Medi-Dentistry," "Russia Postal Service," and "Globex Bank." A couple of these target a well-to-do clientele.
