When: Winter 1992
Where: A kitchen in a large communal apartment in the prestigious center of St. Petersburg. Eleven families live here.
What: A gas heater above one of the two sinks in the kitchen. The wall is covered with soot and dust. Usually gas heaters are installed with an exhaust pipe, but the soot from this heater goes directly to the wall and ceiling. The lamp with its plate-like fixture is typical of communal kitchens.
